The museum is located in the abandoned area of the Sečovlje Saltpans. The building and the salt pans were restored by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, Piran Regional Office. The museum collection of salt making was conceived and established by the “Sergej Mašera” Maritime Museum of Piran. The museum is organised within a renovated salt pan house Caserma. The artefacts, photographs and texts which form the collection illustrate the working and living environment of salt makers. On the ground floor visitors can learn about the development of salt making in the north-eastern Adriatic.
The rich cultural testimony has placed the Sečovlje and Strunjan saltpans to the level of ethnological, technical, historical and landscape heritage of exceptional importance. Since 1990, both complexes have been protected by municipal decrees. The Sečovlje Saltpans and the Museum were declared a national cultural monument in 2001.
