The Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč is probably the best preserved and most beautiful example of early Byzantine art in the Mediterranean. The Basilica was built by the Bishop Euphrasius on the foundations of the former three-nave church in the 6th century. The Basilica and adjacent buildings, including the parish church, the Sacristy, the Baptistery, the belfry, the Mauro’s Oratorium and the bishop’s palace constitute the Euphrasiana, one of the largest building complexes of that period. The Euphrasius Basilica is also famous for magnificent, well preserved mosaics. The Euphrasiana is a historical and cultural monument of global significance, also recognised by UNESCO that inscribed it on the World Heritage List.
